Northumbria Basketball Programme aims to provide a great opportunity for both Men and Women as recreational and performance athletes to participate in an impressive environment.

For the performance athlete, we provide the major route to professionalism by having our own Team Northumbria Basketball National League teams for women and men and a direct link to the Newcastle Eagles. Both Men’s and Women’s 1st teams also play in Premiership BUSA competition. The recreational athlete can also enjoy the basketball life at Northumbria by participating at other levels of competition, be it the 2nd teams or the local league teams.

Eagles, Team Northumbria and the Eagles School of Excellence are all partners in the Eagles Team Northumbria family, for more information contact Deirdre Hayes at d.hayes@eaglescommunityfoundation.com.

Team Northumbria Women

Northumbria women’s team started as South Tyneside and entered National Basketball League 2nd division in 1989, playing at South Shields.  In 1994 the team amalgamated with Sunderland Ladies to become Tyne & Wear and immediately won the league.  Although the team competed in many finals they had to wait till 2000 – 2001 to lift their next trophy as Division II Play-off Champions.

In 2001 the team linked with Northumbria University and built on their previous success with the team being crowned play-off champions in 2004 – 5.  The team followed in the Eagles foots steps the next season as they lifted all trophies including league, play – off and National Trophy.  The team took promotion to the 1st Division for the 2006 – 7 season and as they made their mark within league play the dominated the British Universities Final 8’s.  Tyne & Wear Basketball Development Officer Deirdre Hayes who is head coach for the women’s programme lead the University team to their first BUSA Championship.  The programme also added a division 2 team to take its place in the league after promotion to help with the development of future young talent.
