Newcastle Eagles vs. Wear Valley Shokk

The young high flying Eagles under 18’s are one step closer to completing their perfect season after a comfortable 95-58 victory against Wear Valley.

Guard Daniel Kovacs got the first score of the game with an offensive put back. This sparked a 9-0 run from the home side that seen Shaun Malone & Nick Hart start their personal tally. The clock had reached the 5 minute mark before Wear Valley eventually opened their account. Ben Wildman made his return to action after being sidelined for over 6 weeks. Wildman’s presence was immediately known converting a ‘floater’ in traffic. Not be outdone by Wildman, David Sanderson made his impact on the game driving the lane and finishing a great move. Co-Captain Hart got the last score of the quarter, giving the Eagles a 25-10 lead.

The second quarter was more of the same for the Eagles. Adam Nixon converted a 10 foot jump shot to put the hosts up 19. Shaun Malone continued his fine shooting form in the game and scored his 15th point of the game, still with 3 minutes till the interval. Wear Valley put a brief comeback, scoring 6 straight points to end the quarter trialling 28-41.

Co-Captain Matthew Brown laid down his intentions at the start of the second half by hitting a 3 pointer. With Wildman starting to find a return to form, the Eagles continued their dominance of the game. Great team play at the offensive end led to 9 players scoring in the quarter. Just as he started the game, Kovacs got the final points of the third, giving his team a 63-45 lead.

The last period of play saw the Eagles squash any hope of a comeback that the visitors may have had. Tom Hutchinson was the bright spark for the men in the black as his intense defence and impressive finishing set the tone. Point Guard Nielsen got his first points of the game from the foul line, meaning all 10 players had got on the scoresheet. The game finished 95-58 to the Eagles, leaving them with one league game left to complete the perfect season.

Coach Steutel had mixed reactions after the game “Obviously it’s good for us to continue our win streak but our performance left a lot to be desired. Each member of the squad must find their own way to get them motivated and ready to play at the start of games. However, there were some positives that came out of today’s game. Ben Wildman came through his first game in over 6 weeks and can be proud of his performance. Tom Hutchinson is improving every week and played his best game in an Eagles jersey. Shaun Malone played pretty well on the offensive end and looked like he has his shooting touch back. We will prepare to face a good York team away next Sunday and then continue our preparations for the playoffs”.

Match Report vs. Durham Wildcats

Eagles 77 Wildcats 57

The high flying Under 18’s kept maintained there place at the top of the table whilst keeping their unbeaten record with a tough win against second place Durham Wildcats.

The Eagles came out of the blocks with high intensity but struggled to look after the basketball in the first three minutes. Wildcats were the first side to make it onto the scoreboard behind point guard Batchelor’s points. The Eagles finally settled down and Matthew Brown buried a long range 3 to open their account. This sparked a 7-0 scoring run for the home side. Scrappy play from both teams never really let the game flow and baskets from Richard Summerbell & Nick Hart gave the Eagles an 16-7 advantage heading into the second.

Wildcats continued their pressure defence, knowing that defeat for them would ultimately end their playoff run. The Eagles had settled and started to handle the full court press better, with Dale Nielsen coming off the bench and setting the tempo. Nielsen would have a great quarter finishing with 4 assists and 6 points. The Eagles seemed to be their own worst enemy as the period progressed, giving away late fouls within the shot clock and having far to many turnovers. However, they managed to convert some tough plays on the offensive end and went into the half time break leading 37-25.

Wildcats switched their full court pressure into a zone to start the 3rd quarter. It looked to be the correct decision as it caused the Eagles some problems. As the quarter progressed the Eagles became more comfortable with the Zone and started to break it down. Summerbell was the biggest threat for the Eagles scoring 9 points in the quarter. The Eagles lead 50-44 heading into the last quarter.

Nick Hart, returning to the Eagles line up, got the scoring underway to start the 4th with a good move inside. The Eagles defence, lead by Phil Lawson, turned up the intensity and started to get some stops. Eagles players Hart, Summerbell, Brown, Lawson, Gurpreet Sandhu & Tom Hutchinson all scored to give the home side a 13-4 run to finish the game, the final score 77-57.

Coach Steutel had mixed reactions after the game “There were some great things that we did today, however we were not consistent in the positives. It was great to see all 11 players on the court within the first half and I do truly believe that every player made a positive contribution at some point. However, we must stay in the game mentally for 40 minutes as we seem to be our own worst enemy at times! It was great to see us stretch the game out to 20 points in the end, although the score line flatters us a little on today’s performance. Credit should go to Durham as they played hard to the final whistle and had us on our back foot for periods of the game. We must know work hard in training on certain areas that were exposed in this game to be ready for last two league games.”

The Eagles next game is at Tyne Metropolitan College at 2.30pm on March 7th against cross region rivals Wear Valley Shokk. The Eagles will hope to maintain their perfect season and cement their place at the top of the table.

Northants Thunder 84 – 54 Newcastle Eagles

Under 18’s Premier North

In a grueling 5 hour journey the Eagles U18’s traveled to Northampton to face, for the first time this season, the Northants Thunder.

After the first few minutes of the game the Eagles appeared to be still on the bus after mental errors and lack of concentration lead to missed lay-ups and turnovers. However, after a timeout in the 5th minute, with the Eagles trailing by 12, the started to execute offensively and traded basket for basket with the Thunder for the rest of the quarter.

The Eagles finished the 3rd period trailing 17 – 29, with an excellent 11 points coming from Captain Ben Maliszewski and another 7 from Centre Nariman Gavamieh.

The second period saw the under 18’s play some of their best basketball of the season. Solid defense and a well executed offense lead to the gap being trimmed to only 6 points at the half and the Eagles enter the half time break on a high.

However, the 3rd quarter saw a complete change in fortunes. Due to sloppy footwork the Eagles guards repeatedly turned the ball over and made poor decisions, which lead to unforced turnovers. The Eagles went down by 21 points in the 3rd quarter alone…

In the 4th the Under 18’s defense took hold and they gave a much better account of themselves and some sharp shooting from top scorer Matt Brown lead to the Eagles showing some fight. However, with 5 minutes left Brown fouled out on a poorly times defensive effort and with him went the energy from the Eagles offense.

A big 3rd quarter from Northants meant the score was not a true reflection of a tight first half. Head Coach Ian Macleod said: “We have to concentrate for all 4 quarters of the basketball game! 3 solid quarters does not see a game out, lack of concentration has seen us drop another winnable game.”

The Eagles next game is Saturday 1st March at home to Stockport Falcons who will be looking for revenge after being on the receiving end of an Eagles drumming earlier in the season.

Newcastle Eagles 38 – 93 Sheffield Sharks

U18 Premier North

The Eagles succumbed to their second defeat of the New Year after a very one sided encounter versus Sheffield Junior Sharks.

Although the Eagles were able to create a decent amount of opportunities they severely lacked the finishing touch to complete with a sharp shooting Sharks side. While the Eagles continued to miss open shots and fumble the basketball, Sheffield took their chances and shot very well from the floor to punish the Eagles mistakes.

Sheffield opened up an 18 point gap in the first quarter alone to take a 29-11 lead into the second. The Eagles offensively struggles continued as they amassed only 7 points in the 2nd quarter and a horrific 5 in the 3rd.

The Eagles ended the game scoring 15 in the 4th quarter but the damage had already been done. Sheffield took the game comfortably with a final score of Eagles 38 – Sheffield 93.

The Eagles U18’s next game is an away trip to York where they will be hoping to avenge a narrow home defeat by the Vikings.

Newcastle Eagles 56 – 69 City of Birmingham

Under 18’s Premier Division North

Despite the loss this was an excellent performance from the Eagles…

After 8 games in the 2007 – 08 season, COB had offensive performances of 73, 98 (vs Eagles), 102, 100, 94, 76, 96, 73 and were averaging 89 points per game…

With the Eagles suffocating defense they were held to only 69, their lowest total of the season. It could and should have been even less as the Eagles gave up far too many outside shots against a one dimentional Birmingham side. COB scored 30 points worth of 3-pointers in this one, to hang in the game.

After their first encounter with COB, the Eagles knew exactly what to expect, it was no secret, pressure. COB, as expected, came out with their full court press. However, the Eagles unleashed a press of their own and forced turnover after turnover by the away side. Unlike the last time these two teams met the pressure was easily handled by the home team and in the opening 4 minutes the score was Newcastle 7 – 0 COB. The away side had to resort to forced 3 pointers to stay in the game and with 3 coming in the first quarter, they fought back to lead 15 – 9 at the end of 1.

That was to be the story of the first half, Newcastle applying solid pressure defense and Birmingham staying in contention with long range shooting.

While the Eagles defense was clicking, their offense was hit and miss. Too often Eagles players were driving into gaps that were not their subsequently becoming trapped by Birmingham defenders. Ball rotation was a constantly on the agenda during Coach Ian Macleod’s time-outs, but still poor decisions were being made offensively.

The Eagles cut the lead to as little as 7 points late in the 3rd quarter, but COB finished the 3rd with a 10-0 run to take a good lead into the final period.

Despite the Eagles domination they managed only to win the quarter by 5 points and despite a good performance were left ruing what could have been if they had built on their early advantage.

Final score, Eagles 56 – 69 COB

Trafford v Newcastle Eagles

U18 Men’s Premier North - Saturday 15th December

The score line of the latest Newcastle Eagles under 18’s encounter failed to reflect a hard fought and extremely tight encounter between two evenly matched Premier Division sides…

In the opening quarter it was the Eagles who drew first started the strongest to open op a 7 – 4 lead after the first 4 minutes, as Trafford failed to cope with their pressure defence. However, after 2 missed free throws from the Eagles normally reliable shooter Matt Brown, Trafford went on a 13 – 0 scoring run of their own as they applied their own full court press. The Eagles finished the quarter with a basket each from Captains Brown and Maliszewski with the scoreboard reading 19 – 12 in favour of Trafford.

During the team talk at the end of the period Head Coach Ian Macleod made a tactical change and the Eagles unleashed their press break. Once the players were recognised what the Trafford defence were trying to do, they stuck with them basket for basket as they played out a fast paced 2nd quarter. 11 points from Maliszewski helped the Eagles to 24 points in the period, but Trafford’s Banks was able to keep the home side in the game with 10 of his own.

The 3rd quarter was a different story as the Eagles forced turnover after turnover to launch a 13 point run to reel in the Trafford side. 10 points from big man Nariman Gavameih ensured a winning 3rd period for the Eagles which pulled them back to within 1 point and would have tied the game had Halambeic not missed a free throw with the last action of the quarter.

Maliszewski was working hard to gain revenge on #14 Townley from Trafford who gave the him a torrid time in the previous fixture, and manage to completely shut down the big shooter holding him to only 4 points in the game, 2 of which when Maliszewski was not defending him.

Unfortunately, other match-up did not go as well. 20 points from #11 Gardner and 22 from #12 Pilkington were as a result of poor interior defence late in the game. The Eagles inability to consistently box out saw Trafford get numerous 2nd chance opportunities which deflated the away side.

Despite Brown and Maliszewski leading by example on defence the over-all team’s defensive display was unconvincing. A 31point 4th quarter for Trafford found the Eagles wanting and allowed the home side to run up the score to give a final score which somewhat flattered the Manchester side.

Stockport Falcons 61 – 93 Newcastle Eagles

Under 18 Premier Division North

Saturday 8th December

The under 18’s notched up a fine victory this week with a dominant win over Stockport Falcons. From start to finish the Eagles looked confident and fluid as they took the game to their opponents.

While the team has had a difficult start to the season they have, as predicted, started to hit their stride and gel.

With magnificent team defence the Eagles were able to establish a 24-16 point lead at the end of the first quarter. With 5 points a piece coming from both Nariman Gavameih and Matt Brown, and a total of 8 different scorers in the opening period, the away side were firing on all cylinders.

When Newcastle’s Polish point guard Szymon Halabiec opened the 2nd period with a quick 3-pointer, it was clear the Eagles had no intention of taking their foot off the pedal. No more so than 6`8” Gavameih who took it upon himself to drop 17 second quarter points on the stunned Falcons side. His team mates did an excellent job of working the basketball and providing many post up opportunities for the forward, who finished the half with 22 points. The away side took a 51 – 33 lead into the half-time break and were looking good.
The second half provided much of the same even when the Eagles went to their bench. Good performances from Lewis Coffield, Bobby Morrison and Hossein Barandaranzad provided a strong spark off the bench. However, it was Gavameih again who top scored in the quarter, this time with 4 points as the Eagles started to cruise. At the end of the 3rd the score was 46 – 62 in favour of the away side.
Captain Ben Maliszewski was playing hard-nosed defence for the entire game, but in the 4th decided to take matters into his own hands. The team started to take their foot off the pedal when Stockport opened the period with a 6 point run… then Maliszewski took over! While still playing excellent defence he led by example and racked up 9 points and lifted the team.
Key players in the game were centre Gavameih, Matt Brown, Nick Hart and Shaun Malone in his first start at PG. While a short but sweet performance from Szymon Halabeic (Halabeic fouled out in the 3rd quarter) saw the Eagles take a huge confidence boost, and a pink score sheet, back to the North-East.
Newcastle Eagles Top Scorers:
Nariman Gavameih – 23 points

Matt Brown – 14 points

Nick Hart – 14 points

Ben Maliszewksi – 12 points

Szymon Halabeic – 11 points

Shaun Malone – 11 points

Manchester Magic 106 – 46 Newcastle Eagles
Under 18 Premier Division North
Saturday 24th November

The under 18’s had a tough trip away to table topping Manchester Magic this week, and the match was true to form.

The Magic asserted themselves early in this game with excellent offensive execution and opened up a commanding lead in the first quarter, from which the Newcastle side would never recover.

Manchester’s reputation may have played a part in the Eagles display as team looked shot shy in the opening period. Captain Ben Malaszewski was the team’s main threat but Newcastle could only muster a mere 9 points to Manchester’s 32 in the opening period.

Due to injuries and absences, the game marked the first start of the season for Eagles Point Guard Lewis Coffield. After being thrown in at the deep end, Coffield recovered from a shaky start and in the second half looked confident and bright.

The second quarter was much of the same as the Eagles failed to turn possession into points. Half time brought a 61 – 19 deficit… but also a dramatic change.

After the break the Eagles turned up the pressure and increased the tempo and started to make their mark on the opponents. With high pressured defense and quick hit offense, the Eagles clawed back some pride in the 3rd quarter, and after a dogged fight were unfortunate to lose the quarter by a mere 7 points.

There was much of the same in the 4th with Manchester’s offense being stifled and the Eagles forced them into numerous turnovers and several 24-seconds violations. The away side would actually have won the quarter if not for a late serge from Manchester in the final 2 minutes which saw them run out comfortable winners 106 – 46 on the back of their first half display

The game also marked a proud moment for Eagles player Shaun Malone, who wore the strip for the first time after a long spell on the side-lines due to injury.

Top Scorers for the Eagles were:

Ben Maliszewski 14

Bobby Morrison 8

Matt Brown 8

Newcastle Eagles 62 – 77 York Vikings

Saturday 17th November

The under 18’s latest fixture was a home game vs York Vikings

The home team were looking for their first league victory of the season and should have got it.

The first quarter was an inconsistent one for the Eagles, with captain Ben Maliszewski scoring the home teams first and only 5 points inside the first 5 minutes. The Eagles offense was working smoothly but the finishing failed to match it. York ended the first period with an 8 point lead, 23 – 15.

The second was a completely different story. With suffocating defense the Eagles managed to hold York scoreless for the last 5 minutes before half-time and went on a 15 – 2 run to claw back the lead and tie up the game going into the half time break. 8 points from centre Nariman Gavameih and 4 from Junior Captain Matt Brown capped an impressive period from the home side.

The 3rd saw York go on a run of their own as they opened the quarter scoring an unanswered 9 points in 3 minutes. Then, in a rollercoaster period, the Eagles hit back with a 7 - 2 run pulling within 6 points. That, however, would be as close as they got as missed shots and poor execution on offence allowed York to pull away.

The final score of 62 – 77 failed to show the closeness of the game, but due to a poor 3rd quarter, the scoreline more than flattered the York side.

Top scorers for the Eagles were Gavameih 13, Halabiec 13 and Maliszewski 12.

For York Hutton 20, Eldridge 18 and McNamara 17

TeamSpirit Sheffield Junior Sharks 80 - 42 Newcastle Eagles U18

The under 18's latest fixture was an away fixture to table topping Sheffield.

After a dissapointing loss in their previous game the Eagles players were determined to give a good account of themselves versus an undefeated Sharks side.
The Eagles dominated the opening 5 mins of the game as Sheffield failed to cope with their high pressure defense. The Newcastle side held Sheffield to only 4 points in the first 6 minutes, unfortunately they were unable to turn their superiority into points and only managed a megre 5 themselves. Then, after an injury to starting centre Nariman Gavameih the Eagles struggled to compete for rebounds and were punished by second chance opportunities.

Sheffield slowly got themselves back into the game and ended the quarter with a 18 - 11 lead on the back of 6 points from #4 W. Hall. Eagles centre Nariman Gavameih lead the away team, also with 6 after the first period.

The second period saw Sheffield come out with renewed vigour, and despite excellent defense in the half court set by Newcastle it was points in transition that gave Sheffield a commanding 27 - 6 point win in the 2nd, with centre Gavameih still sidelined.

After a rousing half-time team talk, the Eagles came out in the 3rd quarter and took the game to Sheffield! Senior Captain Ben Malaszewski contributed 6 points in the quarter and that coupled with some intense defense from Junior Captain Matt Brown, saw the Eagles win the Quarter 13-12.

However, the early lead Sheffield established saw them through until the end of the game with the home team finally winning 80 points to 42.

The Eagles team can take some comfort in the fact that they held the Sarks to their lowest points total of the season! With this game always going to be a tough encounter, there were definately more positives to come out of this game than negatives...

Tees Valley Mohawks 79 – 70 Newcastle Eagles

Sunday 4th November

The Under 18’s second game in 2 days saw them travel to Tees Valley to face the Mohawks.

The first quarter saw a sluggish display from the Eagles as they allowed the Mohawks to open up an early 15 point lead with little over 5 minutes gone!

However, the Eagles started to slowly take over the game and dictate the tempo as they finished hard around the hoop and played some suffocating defense to reduce the game to 7 by the end of the quarter.

The next quarter saw a very strong display from Eagles guard Hossein Barandaranzad and his buzzer beating lay-up reduced the lead to 2 at half time. After the break the Eagles came out with renewed vigor and managed to control the 3rd period, winning it by 9 points.

Rebounding was the key with Nariman Gavameih and Dickon Morrison controlling the boards and altering shots. A tough lay-up under heavey pressure by Malaszewski, which resulted in and and-1, saw the Eagles take the lead and it looked as though their pressure was finally going to pay off.

However, a stong 4th quarter from the Mohawks, led by Captain Dave Hansen’s 28 points, saw the home side claw the lead back and eventually take the elad for good with under 5 minutes to play.

The under 18’s next game is an away fixture to TeamSpirit Sheffield  Junior Sharks

Newcastle Eagles 69 – 73 Sefton Junior Stars

Saturday 3rd November

A solid defensive display from the Eagles under 18’s was not enough for them to pick up a win this weekend…

While the Eagles defense again looked sharp, unforced turnovers late in the game resulted in a tough loss for the Newcastle side.

Despite strong personal performances from debutant Szymon Halabiec and junior captain Matthew Brown, the Eagles threw away a 3rd quarter lead and were unable to get back into the game with the clock winding down.

The game began with Sefton taking an early lead and dominating the 1st quarter. However, a determined 2nd quarter from the Eagles saw them pull the score back and take a 2 point lead into half time.

Early in the 3rd quarter the Eagles rallied to take a 10 point lead thanks to some sharp shooting from guards Halabiec and Malaszewski. However, Sefton slowly started to get back into the game and the lead was cut to 2 points in the final stages of the quarter. The away side’s determination was rewarded when they took a 7 point lead into the final period.

The Eagles were unable to get back into the game from there and despite a 30 foot 3-point shot under intense pressure, from Captain Ben Malaszewski, they were unable to reduce the gap to less than 4.

The Eagles next game is at Tees Valley Mohawks, Sunday 4th November.

City of Birmingham 98 – 44
Newcastle Eagles U18

Saturday 27th October

A depleted Under 18’s side traveled to Birmingham Saturday in their first away fixture of the 2007 – 08 season.

With injuries to several key players (Embleton, Coffield, Rooney, Malone) and Point Guard Szymon Halabiec still awaiting International clearance it was always going to be a tough game for the Newcastle side. The Eagles, under intense pressure from Birmingham, failed to match the high-tempo of the game in its early stages.

Intense pressure and physical play from the Birmingham side forced the Eagles into committing early turnovers from which they never recovered, as the first half was dominated by the home side. Birmingham had built a 14 point lead by the end of the first period and led by 40 at the half. Eagles Guard Hossein Barandaranzad did his utmost to spark his team into life with 8 first quarter points, finishing the half with 12 after some excellent shooting from the free throw line.

Birmingham’s physical approach started to catch up with them as Rudge and Notice fouled out in a game that saw 28 fouls called against them, to Newcastle’s 10.

The second half showed some improvement from the Eagles and they managed to win the fourth quarter. There were some positives to come out of the game however. When they managed to get to grips with the tempo of the game, Newcastle’s trapping defense worked effectively and forced Birmingham to result to tough 3-point shots under heavy pressure.

Once the home team switched to a zone, the Eagles looked confident and effective in there offense. But with 40+ points coming directly from Newcastle’s turnovers, Birmingham were able to score in transition, thus denying the defense a chance to set-up.

Unfortunately, the fourth quarter improvement was too little too late for the Eagles.

The under 18's next game is away to Tees Valley in the second round of the Sureshot cup, Saturday 3rd November.

Match Report - Newcastle Eagles U18 vs. East Durham

Eagles 87 – East Durham 51

In a dominating display the Newcastle Eagles Under 18’s rolled over East Durham to earn their first victory of the season.  The Eagles high energy and high pressure defence allowed them to control the game from start to finish. Newcastle centre, Nariman Gavamieh, dominated early on with 8 points in the opening quarter.

At the end of the first period the home team held a 7 point advantage 21 – 14. East Durham attempted to compensate for Newcastle’s strong inside game, only for the Eagles to tighten their grip on the game with even more pressure defense. Newcastle guard Hossein Barandaranzad came off the bench and contributed 11 points in the quarter in an Eagles route, winning the quarter by 16 points to stretch their lead to 46 – 23.

Eagles point guard Ryan Lambert was instrumental in the victory forcing turnover after turnover while contributing 11 points and working well with Centre Gavamieh (20). On the other side of the ball Captain Ben Maliszewski led by example with suffocating defence to hold East Durham to only 51 points in the game.

The Eagles next game is at Birmingham on Saturday 27th October.

Match Report - Newcastle Eagles vs. Trafford  - 6th October 2007

Eagles 71 Trafford 77

In a close encounter between two evenly matched teams the Newcastle Eagles suffered a defeat on the opening day of the season.

With Under 18’s Head Coach Ian Macleod being unable to coach the game due to health reasons, Newcastle Eagles BBL Head Coach Fab Flournoy stepped in to take control of the team.

A strong inside move from Eagles centre Nariman Gavamieh got the game underway. Trafford came back with 6 unanswered points to set the trend of the 1st quarter. Both teams would go on scoring run’s throughout the quarter with Trafford taking a slight edge into the second leading 18-21.

Trafford started the second quarter with 5 unanswered points until a 3 pointer from Shaun Malone broke their run. Trafford’s defence started to concentrate on the post play from Nariman Gavamieh after he had 8 first quarter points, allowing other Newcastle Eagles players to come alive on the offensive end. Coach Flournoy switched the defence into a zone, which proved to be successful for the Eagles. At the end of the half the Eagles trailed by 6 points, 33-39.

Coach Flournoy stuck with the zone defence at the start of the 3rd quarter. Eagles captain Ben Maliszewski was carrying a lot of the scoring load finishing with 10 points in the period. However, it was Hossein Baradaranzad who stood out for the Eagles with his aggressive defending and his slick point scoring. On the back of Baradaranzad’s play the eagles had cut the deficit to 4 points at the end of the quarter trailing 54-58.

The Eagles high energy defence sometimes converted to unforced turnovers on the offensive end. This pattern continued in the fourth quarter. Losing captain Ben Maliszewski to foul trouble, along with the unforced turnovers eventually led to the Eagles losing the game 71-77.
