NEWCASTLE EAGLES UNDER 16 GIRL'S 59 V GATESHEAD STORM 43

The Newcastle team put on a mid week fixture against local rivals Gateshead Storm at Newcastle College.

The Eagles stepped out on the court and the performance they put in made Coach Bennett think that the Eagles thought that they would win this match without even trying and ended up 10 – 2 down. A time out from the coach and the girls went out with more focus but were unable to change the score in their favour before the end of the first half 29 – 20 in Gateshead’s favour.

In the second half the Eagles put on a full court press to try to cut down the margin and claim the victory. And it worked with the Eagles being able to convert their defence to baskets at the other end as at the end of the third quarter the Eagles were now in the lead 41 – 35. In the fourth the Eagles kept the lead and came out victorious with a final score of 59 – 43.

Top Scorers for the Eagles were Amy Sutton with 15 points, Jenna Shaw 11 points and Rena Armstrong 8 points.

Top Scorers for the Gateshead were R Farrey with 14 points, A Todd with 11 points and L Watson and R Spragg both with 4 points.

NEWCASTLE EAGLES UNDER 16 GIRL'S 33 V BARROW THORNS 116

On 24th January the Eagles were travelling to Barrow for their next league fixture at the Hoops Basketball Centre. This is the second time the Eagles will face this team this season and in their first meet Barrow took the victory 35 – 68.

Barrow opened the scoring as the Eagles found it difficult to convert. The Barrow team ran at the Eagles and the girls found it difficult to prevent the fast break and stop the Barrow team from converting the easy baskets. At the end of the first quarter the Barrow team had outscored the Eagles 30 – 6. The Newcastle girl’s heads went down and the second quarter was much of the same with Beth Gordon the only player able to convert in this period to give the Eagles total 8 for the first half.

After a stern talking to by Coach Sarah Bennett the Eagles came out in the second half with a more positive look and started the scoring with Amy Sutton converting two from the line and Beth Gordon again hitting a little outside jumper. The Eagles performance improved but not enough and the barrow team took the third quarter 36 – 16. The Eagles found themselves with a deep hole to try and dig themselves out of and not able to convert in the fourth the Eagles lost with a big margin of 116 – 33 in favour of Barrow.

Top Scorers for the Eagles were Amy Sutton with 14 points, Bethany Gordon 7 points and Rachael Cryer 6 points.

Top Scorers for the Barrow were N Wood and R Brown both with 31 points and A Knowles with 23 points.

NEWCASTLE EAGLES UNDER 16 GIRL'S 73 V EVERTON TIGERS 45

The next team to visit the Eagles was Everton Tigers. The Eagles were hoping to secure another win after their two losses to Barrow and Manchester.

The first quarter was a close one going back and forth with some good basketball from both teams. And at the first quarter final buzzer the score was 15 a piece. The second quarter the Eagles came out strong with Jenna Shaw going to basket and being fouled making the basket but unfortunately she could not convert the free throw for a three point play. With Amy Sutton making 5 points and Jenna making another move inside the Eagles found themselves 21 – 15 up. The rest of the second quarter was much of the same and the Eagles were up at half time 33 – 25.

In the second half the Newcastle side came out strong and from an excellent performance from Amy Sutton continued to increase their lead. Outscoring the Everton side 21 – 12 in the third going out in the fourth the Eagles girls continued to put in a good performance and finished off the match with the win 73 – 45.

NEWCASTLE EAGLES UNDER 16 GIRL'S 29 V MANCHESTER MYSTICS 116

U16 girls found themselves hosting Manchester Mystic for their next league fixture. Coach Sarah Bennett knew from the start that this would be a tough match as the Manchester girls programme is a long established successful one.

The tip began the game with Jenna Shaw being fouled on shooting not being able to convert the free throws Manchester were first to open the scoring and Eagles struggled to stop them and found themselves down 16 – 0 until Jenny Spires found the basket putting the first points on the board. Manchester went on another run and unfortunately the Eagles found themselves down 32 – 8 at end of 1st quarter.

The second quarter the eagles did not find their game and constantly let Manchester run over them and take control on both ends of the court and the half time score was 66 – 16.

In the second half the Eagles played better but could not find the basket to convert their hard work. The Manchester team however were well drilled and consistent throughout the match. The final score was Eagles 29, Manchester 116

Top scorers for the Eagles were Jenny Spires with 8 points, Rena Armstrong 5 points  and Amy Sutton 4 points.

Top scorers for Manchester were M. Campbell with 22 points, L. McDerment 19 and L. Rogan 17 points.

NEWCASTLE EAGLES UNDER 16 GIRL'S 35 V BARROW THORNS 68

U16 girls had their third match of the season on Oct 25th when they played host to Barrow Thorns. The visitors came out strong from the tip and the Eagles found themselves 10 – 0 down. A time out by coach Sarah Bennett was taken to wake the girls up which seemed to gee them up but wasn’t enough as the first quarter ended with the Eagles down 26 – 5.

The second quarter the eagles made a push and managed to put pressure on the Barrow team winning the quarter 20 – 13. This helped with reducing the lead that Barrow had but wasn’t enough to give the Eagles the lead as at half time the score was 25 – 39 to Barrow.

In the second half the Eagles started off very similar to how they had entered the game and allowed Barrow to go on numerous runs with no answer at the other end from the Eagles. The Eagles only scored 4 pints with Bethany Gordon and Rachael Cryer scoring two points each respectively. Going into the fourth the Newcastle girls stepped it up a little bit but they had dug themselves a hole that was too deep to get out of and ended the match 35 – 68 down.

Top scorers for the Eagles were Rachael Cryer 11 points, Amy Sutton 8 points, Rena Armstrong 8 points and Jenny Spires 6 points.

Top scorers for Barrow Thorns were R.Brown 27 points, P. Carr 12 points and N. Wood 12 points.
