Andrew Bridge is now in sixth season with the club having joined from his first pro-club in Sheffield Sharks having originally played at Mansfield.
“Bridgey” has carved out a real career for himself since arriving and has never looked back. Coached by current Great Britain coach Chris Finch under Sheffield but never given serious court-time, he has flourished under Fab Flournoy.
Nothing much was expected of Bridgey when he arrived but some five completed season later, he has collected seven BBL trophies, picked up a Commonwealth Bronze Medal with England and become a huge favourite with the Eagles fans.
His fundamentals were always sound but by his own admission, Bridgey could never rely on his talent alone and he epitomises what hard work and dedication can achieve within British Basketball.
He has been described as “the model professional” and few would argue as it his professionalism and honesty that sets him apart from others.
Bridgey never hides behind poor individual or team performances and his refreshing and often brutal honesty pleases the fans.
A shooting guard, he can also handle the ball competently and is best known for his solid defence and smart basketball brain. A real all-rounder and rapidly becoming the glue that helps hold the team together.
Whether he can excel past the “Mr Reliable” tag remains to be seen but he has certainly improved with every single season and added new features to his continually improving game.
He is always getting knocked off his feet because of his effective defensive positioning and he is always moaning at referees although some would say he is always moaning full stop.
The one player that you could see having another ten years at the club and perhaps even more before suiting up on the sidelines. That would at least give him plenty of opportunity to crack a first smile when in in an Eagles vest.
If you do see Bridgey smile on the court then you have witnessed a truly rare event.
But not as rare as him going 40 minutes without moaning about something.
