Charles Smith is in his fourth spell with the club having originally signed as a rookie way back in 1999 for the then coach Craig Lynch. During his first season, Charles was a high flying and athletic young forward capable of scoring although did miss a large chunk of the season due to injury.
Maturing into a veteran player and coping with several injuries , Charles has adapted his game and having worked hard on his shooting is now one of the biggest inside-outside threats in British Basketball. His ability to score from long range out on the three-point line as well as shoot over people closer to the hoop inside makes him a nightmare to guard and even more so since he is often used by Fab Flournoy as "instant offence" off the bench.
Charles found some real success with the Eagles in 2004/05 and 2005/06 when he was part of a team that won six trophies including the first in the club’s history while his performance in the play-off semi-finals of the
2005/06 clean sweep season was one of the most memorable of all time.
His swashbuckling style and laid back approach centred around having fun on the court and lapping up the adulation has resulted in him forming a special relationship with the Eagles fans. This was borne out during 2006/07 when after playing in Spain with Caja Rioja he was given a standing ovation on a fleeting trip home when he chose to check out his former team-mates in action.
This year Charles could be the difference between success and failure - if he stays fit he has a definite chance of not only Eagles MVP but possibly a league MVP award too. With added experience of Europe, his game has the potential to fire the club to glory in 2007/08.
